Not sure if your question has already been answered elsewhere, but I'll still answer. Far Cry 5 Co-op is weird. You have to be at the main menu and hit the button on your controller next to "In-game party". From there, you can send your friend an invite. Once he's accepted the invite, back out and continue your game. Your friend should spawn in.
